Hippocrates Square

Nestled in the heart of Rhodes Old Town, Hippocrates Square is a captivating and historically rich focal point that draws visitors with its unique charm and vibrant energy. As a prominent tourist attraction and point of interest, it serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the medieval city, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A Vibrant Hub of History and Ambiance ✨
Visitors consistently praise Hippocrates Square for its beautiful character and inviting atmosphere. It's a place where one can truly "see history in front of you" while soaking in the lively surroundings. The square radiates a "good atmosphere" that makes it feel welcoming and open, even during busy periods. One reviewer noted that even when it was "very busy" on a Friday late afternoon, it "didn't feel like it," a testament to its spacious and enjoyable vibe.
For a particularly enchanting experience, many recommend visiting during sundown, as the "vibe is immaculate," offering a picturesque setting as the day transitions to night.
Shopping & Dining Experiences 🛍️🍽️
Hippocrates Square is bustling with "loads of shops and restaurants to choose from," presenting a wide array of options including "different cultural choices." It's an ideal spot for leisurely "window shopping" or finding unique souvenirs that reflect the island's heritage.
Dining Insights
While the abundance of dining options is a significant draw, opinions on quality and pricing vary. Some visitors have lauded finding "amazing food" at "highest google rated restaurant[s]," noting that prices were comparable to other establishments. However, another perspective suggests that shops can be "expensive" and some restaurants of "low quality," expressing concern over prices for items like espresso (€3.50) and a single scoop of ice cream (€2.80), which they found "more expensive than Rome or any other touristic place." Despite this, reliable options such as a souvlaki place and a well-stocked kiosk are often available, especially during the off-season.
Location and Seasonal Charm 🚶♀️🍂
As a "good central location near attractions," Hippocrates Square is perfectly situated for extended exploration of the Old Town. Visitors can easily spend an entire day just walking around, immersing themselves in the historical treasures and charming alleyways nearby.
It's worth noting the square's distinct seasonal variations. During the off-season, it tends to be "sleepy and quiet," with fewer shops open, offering a more tranquil and laid-back experience. In contrast, during peak season, it thrives with activity, embodying the bustling spirit of Rhodes Old Town. The presence of a charming fountain adds to its appeal, providing a serene focal point amidst the surrounding vibrancy.
Overall Recommendation 👍
Hippocrates Square is an essential stop for anyone exploring Rhodes Old Town. Its unique blend of history, lively atmosphere, and central location makes it a memorable part of the island experience. While it's advisable to be mindful of prices in some establishments, the overall character and charm of the square, particularly its ability to offer a glimpse into the past, make it a highly recommended destination.
Loved this place. Really wish we had longer there but on an excursion. Love to return and stay in Rhodes one day.
This is the main square in old town. If you can't find it here and in the surrounding streets...you're not looking! One tip in Greece...at a restaurant or anywhere in general make sure you see prices. Don't assume!
Kindness and honesty are hard to come by. When we arrived at the square, every restaurant was shouting at us to come in. But this restaurant stood out — they were so kind and calm. Even though we were looking for gyros in a wrap, they kindly pointed us across the road to another place that offered it. I truly hope others support them — they deserve it.
Lots of nice restaurants, bars and shops in this area and it's a great people watching spot.
A wander through the old town cobbled streets is a must! Full of little shops and cafes and bars. Plenty of food options. A drink in the square watching the world go buy is fab.
