The Italian Arch Bridge, nestled in the Archaggelos area of Rhodes Island, is an intriguing historical landmark that offers a glimpse into the island's past. While it may not be a sprawling attraction, it serves as a unique point of interest for those exploring the less-trodden paths of Rhodes.

What to Expect ✨

  • The bridge itself is described by visitors as an "interesting old bridge" and is noted to have been "recently restored," enhancing its appearance and structural integrity.
  • Many reviewers found it to be "atmospheric," offering a quiet moment of reflection amidst the natural surroundings.
  • However, it's important to manage expectations; some reviewers noted it is "literally just a bridge" and that there's "nothing really there" beyond the structure itself. It's best viewed as a brief historical stop rather than a destination for extended exploration.

Historical Significance 📜

Dating back to the Italian occupation era (possibly the 1940s), the bridge is believed by some to have been part of the old main road to Lindos. This historical context adds a layer of interest, connecting visitors to the island's past infrastructure. Additionally, a little further west, remnants of an old Italian Airfield can be found, offering further historical connections for those keen on exploring the area's wartime heritage.

Access and Travel Tips ⚠️🚗

This is a crucial point for potential visitors:

  1. The access road to the bridge is reportedly in "very poor condition" and characterized by "rough terrain."
  2. Visitors strongly advise that the road is "not kind to a small rental car." If you plan to visit, particularly if you intend to continue towards the nearby "big Dam," it is highly recommended to be in a vehicle that can handle rough terrain, such as a 4x4 or a more robust car, to avoid potential damage to a standard rental.

Overall Recommendation 🌟

The Italian Arch Bridge is a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts, those seeking a peaceful, atmospheric spot, or anyone passing by on their way to the Dam. Its recent restoration makes it visually appealing, and its historical context adds depth to the visit. Just be sure to prepare for the challenging access road to ensure a smooth journey to this quaint piece of Rhodes' history.

Great little bridge on the way to the big Dam…. However if you continue to the Dam make sure you’re in a vehicle that can handle a bit of rough terrain.

Visited here many years ago. Atmospheric but nothing really there. I assume this was actually the old main road to Lindos in the 1940's. A little further west is the remains of the old Italian Airfield. Never mentioned but visible tarmac/concrete visible from the main modern Lindos road. Fuzzed out interestingly on Google Maps. Why fuzzed out? It's over 70 year ago since it was used !
