Medieval Trench Trail

The Medieval Trench Trail in Rhodes offers a unique and immersive journey around the ancient fortifications of Rhodes Old Town. Situated at Rhodes 851 00, Greece, this extensive path provides visitors with a close-up perspective of the impressive medieval walls, making it a compelling attraction for history enthusiasts and keen walkers alike.
The Experience: What to Expect ✨
Often described as a beautiful and very interesting walk, the trail allows you to explore the outside perimeter of the castle, providing ample opportunities for sightseeing. Many visitors consider it one of the best activities to do in Rhodes, praising its historical significance and the sheer scale of the medieval architecture.
The path brings you out near the harbour at the south of the old town, offering a continuous loop without many hidden exits between the start and finish points. While one reviewer mentioned an approximate one-hour walk, another noted the walls are indeed extensive, spanning around 10 kilometers. The experience is largely self-guided, offering a sense of freedom to explore at your own pace.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife; if the sun is shining, you might spot lizards basking on the ancient walls, adding a touch of natural charm to your historical adventure. Crucially, the trail is free to access, making it an excellent value activity for all.
Important Considerations for Your Visit 🚶♀️☀️
While largely positive, some vital practical points are worth noting for those planning to tackle the Medieval Trench Trail:
Length and Endurance 👣
Contrary to assumptions, this is not a short or leisurely stroll for everyone. The full circumference of the walls is quite long, potentially up to 10 kilometers. Be prepared for a significant walk.
Lack of Amenities 💧
A crucial piece of advice from past visitors is the absence of infrastructure along the majority of the trail. There is little to no shade, no places to buy water, and very few hidden exits or clear signage once you venture beyond the initial entrance. It is highly recommended to bring your own water, especially on hot days, and consider sun protection.
Navigation and Exits 🗺️
Given the limited exits and signage, some visitors suggest that a 15-minute walk to the first tower before turning around might be a more manageable option for those not prepared for the full, extended circuit. Plan your route and be aware that once you commit to a section, immediate exits may not be readily available.
Overall Verdict ✅
The Medieval Trench Trail is a highly rewarding historical path that offers an unparalleled glimpse into Rhodes' rich past. It's an opportunity for a unique and memorable walk around magnificent fortifications. However, to truly enjoy the experience, especially during the warmer months, come prepared with water, sun protection, and a realistic understanding of the trail's length and lack of amenities. For those ready for the challenge, it's undoubtedly worth the effort.
Beautiful walk around the outside of the castle. Lots to look at and explore for free. Brings you put by the harbour at the south of the old town, between the start and finish there aren't any other exits. If the sun is shining keep an eye out for Lizards on the walls too!
Do not be fooled - this is NOT a leisurely organised walk, the walls are 10 km long and this walk offers little shade, no place to buy water, very few hidden exits or signage. Recommend a 15 min walk to the first tower before turning around, no infrastructure exists beyond the entrance!!!
For me, this is simply the best thing you can do in Rhodes. Amazing.
