Located in Ialysos 851 01, Rhodes Island, Greece, Pauwenbos is not a conventional zoo, but rather a remarkable point of interest and establishment where nature takes center stage. It offers a truly unique experience centered around its vibrant population of peacocks, freely roaming in a beautiful natural setting.

The Magnificent Peacocks of Pauwenbos 🦚

The undisputed stars of Pauwenbos are the numerous peacocks. Visitors consistently rave about the sheer abundance of these stunning birds, with some estimates suggesting over 50 peacocks freely inhabiting the area. These birds are incredibly confident, loud, and proud, making their presence known throughout the entire site. You'll find them everywhere – perched above the gift shop, nesting in the trees, and even atop the cross, creating a truly immersive and lively atmosphere.

While many of the peacocks are docile and some may even approach visitors, allowing for fantastic photo opportunities and even gentle petting, it's crucial to exercise caution. Not all birds are equally friendly, and it's best to observe their demeanor. Only attempt to touch them if they are close enough and not displaying their feathers in an intimidating manner. Respecting their space is paramount.

Beyond the Birds: Scenic Views and Practical Information

Pauwenbos offers more than just its feathered residents. Ascending to the cross provides awesome views of the surrounding landscape, a delightful bonus to your visit. Alongside the peacocks, some visitors have also been lucky enough to spot goats, adding another layer of natural charm to the experience.

One of the most appealing aspects of Pauwenbos is its free access, making it an excellent and cost-effective attraction for families and individuals alike (though it's always wise to confirm current entry conditions, especially during holidays). Convenient parking is available nearby, ensuring easy accessibility for visitors.

Important Tips for a Fulfilling Visit ✨

To ensure a pleasant and respectful visit for both you and the resident wildlife, keep the following in mind:

  1. Do not feed the birds: While some peacocks might appear to be looking for food, providing them with human food can be detrimental to their health and natural foraging habits.
  2. Observe and respect their space: Allow the peacocks to approach you if they wish, and avoid chasing or cornering them. They are wild animals, albeit accustomed to human presence.
  3. No pets allowed: 🐾 For the safety and well-being of the free-roaming peacocks and other wildlife, pets are not permitted within Pauwenbos.
  4. Family Fun Activity: 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 If visiting with children, make it a fun game to count how many peacocks they can spot on the walk to the cross. This can turn the visit into an engaging scavenger hunt!

Overall Recommendation

Pauwenbos comes highly recommended by visitors of all ages. It offers a refreshing and authentic wildlife encounter, far removed from the confines of typical, often run-down, petting zoos. It's an excellent destination for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience on Rhodes Island.

These birds absolutely own and run the place lol 🦚They are very confident and some are even friendly enough to let you approach for photos and pet them as they try to see if you have food for them. Not all are docile, so I don’t recommend petting them unless they’re close enough to touch and not extending their feathers in an intimidating manner. They are loud and proud, plus all over the place. Above the shop, over the trees. On the cross. Everywhere! No pets allowed.Parking nearby.Free access, at least today during holiday.Avoid feeding them, and respect their space.Family tip: tell your kids to count how many they can see as they walk to the cross. Give them all prices and the winner something special from the gift shop 😄

Visit this with kids and have fun, it is free (at least at the moment) and a lot much fun than any of the run down "petting zoos" which should be closed for animal cruelty.
