The Prasonisi Lighthouse, located at the southernmost point of Rhodes Island, offers a truly unique and memorable experience for adventurous travelers. More than just a beacon, it serves as a captivating destination for those seeking stunning panoramic views, a challenging yet rewarding hike, and a glimpse into the raw beauty of the Aegean.

📍 Location & Accessibility

Situated in Prasonisi, 851 09, Greece, the lighthouse stands on what is often referred to as a "small island" or peninsula, connected to the mainland by a sandy spit (which can be submerged depending on the season, creating two distinct beaches). Accessing the lighthouse requires a commitment to a trek:

  • From the parking area, it takes approximately 10 minutes to cross the beach and reach the start of the path.
  • The walk from the beach to the lighthouse itself is about 2 kilometers.
  • Allow for 30-60 minutes one-way for this portion of the journey, depending on your pace and stops for photos.

🚶 The Journey to the Lighthouse

Be prepared for a proper hike! The path to the lighthouse is described as a "well-defined path," but it's important to note it's not an easy trek. You'll encounter:

  • Hilly terrain: Expect uphill and downhill sections.
  • Hard ground: The path can be challenging underfoot.
  • Wind: Prepare for extremely strong winds, especially as you approach and reach the lighthouse. It can be literally "breath-taking"!

Despite the effort, reviewers consistently state that the walk is "worth every minute" and "worth it" for the payoff.

💡 The Lighthouse Itself

The Prasonisi Lighthouse is an old, abandoned structure. While it adds to the remote and atmospheric feel, visitors should be aware:

  • The lighthouse is generally locked and not officially accessible.
  • Some visitors have managed to "sneak a look inside," which can add to the "creepy" yet intriguing atmosphere, but keep in mind that exploring an abandoned building is at your own risk.
  • There are indications that people may occasionally stay there.

🏞️ Breathtaking Views & Unique Scenery

The primary draw of the Prasonisi Lighthouse is undoubtedly the spectacular natural beauty surrounding it:

  • Experience "breath-taking views" from the top, offering panoramic vistas of the Aegean Sea.
  • Witness the incredible phenomenon where "the 2 seas are so different but then eventually join" – a unique geological feature of Prasonisi.
  • It's a fantastic spot for a beautiful sunset hike, though this requires extra planning.

🐐 Friendly Wildlife

During your trek, you're likely to encounter some local residents:

  • Expect to see "lots of goats roaming around" and "friendly goats" along the path, adding to the charm of the experience.

📝 Essential Tips for Your Visit

To ensure a pleasant and safe visit, keep the following recommendations in mind:

  1. Footwear is Crucial: Wear "sensible shoes" or "proper shoes". Flip-flops or sandals are not advisable for this terrain.
  2. Be Prepared for Wind: The wind can be very strong, so consider bringing a windbreaker or appropriate clothing.
  3. No Facilities at the Lighthouse: There are "no toilets once you get there." You'll find facilities back at the beach area near the parking lot.
  4. Sunset Visits: If you plan to catch the sunset, be aware that it will be dark on the way back. "I would recommend to take a flashlight with you and stick to the path because it will be hard to find it in the dark."
  5. Explore Responsibly: The lighthouse is abandoned; "explore at your own risk."

Overall, Prasonisi Lighthouse is highly recommended for those who appreciate natural beauty, a good walk, and a slightly rugged adventure off the beaten path.

A rewarding hike to the lighthouse – totally worth it!We decided to hike up to the lighthouse after checking that it was about 2 km one way — and we did it! The whole walk (up and down) took us around 40 minutes, not counting the time we spent taking photos and enjoying the view at the top. In total, it was about an hour, and it was absolutely worth every minute. At first, I had to convince my mom to join — she wasn’t sure if it was worth climbing under the sun, with rocky paths. But once we started, we were both so happy we did it.The trail itself is a mix of ups and downs, and you don’t actually see the lighthouse until almost the very end, which makes the final view so rewarding — it truly feels like an achievement.Along the way, we saw wild mountain goats, beautiful sea views, and dramatic cliffs. It was honestly one of the best moments of our trip to Rhodes. The scenery is incredible, and the feeling when you reach the lighthouse is just unforgettable. We were wearing Birkenstocks and sandals, so it’s doable in light shoes, but if you have hiking shoes or sneakers, it would definitely be more comfortable. Also, be aware that it’s very windy at the top — bring a scarf or light jacket to cover your neck.If you’re already at the nearby beach or in the area, we highly recommend this short hike. It’s not too difficult, there are no dangerous parts, and the experience is truly amazing. Don’t miss it!

The light House was nice to visit. It takes a bit till you get there, i think about 45 min from the beach to the Tower. Its a nice easy hike. The light House itself is ok. You will also see goats around you while hike there. Nothing special but i Likes it.

This was a great walk to the furthest south of Rhodes. Very hilly up and down, but worth it. Walking around the light house itself was a bit creepy, and sneaking a look inside, looks like people stay there. But honestly added to the atmosphere. No toilets once you get there. But a nice place back at the beach. Lots of goats roaming around.

It was a great experience..from the parking spot..it need approximately 10 minutes to cross the beach and get to the other side..from there there is well defined path..that lead you to the light house..took us 1hour in total from the parking lot to the light house..with slow walking and one or two stops to see the view and take some photos...one thing you need to be aware of is the really strong wind on the top of the light house...it was worth every minute and the view is breath taking!!NOTE!We left the parking lot at 18:30 to catch the sunset..in the way back we lost the sun..i would recommend to take a flashlight with you and stick to the path because it will be hard to find it in the dark.
