Goat Spring

FEATURES
Located at Afantou 851 03, Greece, Goat Spring is described as a hiking area, park, and point of interest, offering a raw, untamed experience amidst the Rhodian landscape. This site elicits a range of opinions, from those who find it a place of strong energy and untouched beauty to others who deem it not worth the effort due to accessibility challenges and seasonal conditions.
Hiking & Accessibility Considerations ⛰️🚶♀️
The terrain at Goat Spring is consistently highlighted as a primary factor in the visitor experience. It is not recommended for children or individuals without mountain experience. Reviewers describe the paths as:
- Rocky and uneven: Making it difficult for those unaccustomed to such trails.
- Bushy and thorns-covered: Further impeding easy navigation.
- Challenging direct routes: Requiring athletic fitness for those who wish to tackle the more demanding paths.
However, some visitors note that there might be an easier route available, suggesting that while the direct path is strenuous, alternative ways to explore exist for those with less climbing skill.
Wildlife & Seasonal Observations 🐐☀️
As the name suggests, the presence of goats is an expectation, and reviews offer mixed insights:
- Some visitors reported seeing many live goats.
- Others only encountered a few, remarking that more goats were seen in the general surrounding area of Rhodes.
The "spring" aspect also varies seasonally. It is noted that the spring can be largely dried up during summer or late spring. Therefore, a visit during spring or autumn is generally recommended for a potentially better experience, both in terms of water presence and perhaps, goat sightings.
Unique Atmosphere & Potential Concerns 🧘♀️❗
For those who connect with its wild character, Goat Spring offers a unique atmosphere:
- Described as "gorgeous by its wilderness and unique shapes."
- Some found it an "amazing place with strong energy, far from all the people."
However, a significant concern was raised in April 2023 by one visitor who observed shell casings and remains of shot goats on the trail. This suggests potential hunting activity or other human interference, which is a critical point to consider, especially for families. It is advised to exercise caution or avoid the area with children due to these findings.
Is it Worth the Visit? 🤔
Goat Spring appears to be a destination that caters to a specific type of traveler. It is:
- An ideal spot for experienced hikers seeking solitude and a challenging, natural environment.
- Potentially underwhelming for those expecting an easily accessible "park" or a guaranteed abundance of water and goats, especially during drier seasons.
Given its proximity (reportedly just 5 minutes off the road), some suggest that if you are nearby, it might be worth a quick look to form your own opinion, keeping in mind the varied experiences and potential challenges.
Good for people with experience in hiking, not recommended for kids or people with no mountain experience. The place is gorgeous by his wilderness and unique shapes.
Unfortunately not really worth the effort. I visited Goat Spring with my girlfriend, who has no experience in hiking, and she wasn't able to get far due to the many rocks on the 'path'. I went a bit further myself, but most of the spring has dried up and there are practically no goats at all (at least not more than around the general area, about which we saw five). Maybe during spring or autumn this place is in better shape, but I wouldn't recommend it during summer or late spring.
It is just a bushy, thorns covered place. Not accessible to walk/hike.Saw 5 goats. But i saw 200 goats on the rest of my week stay here.. so was it worth it?Not really. But it's just 5 minutes off the road. So if u want to go here, just take look for yourself.
the most amazing place with strong energy, far from all the people, I have not seen anything better
Quite a good path, does not necessarily require the skills of a climber, because you can go around via an easier route, but you can also go straight, in which case athletic fitness is necessary. In April 2023, I noticed shell casings and the remains of shot goats on the trail, so I would go around the place with the children. There are live goats and lots of them.
